You have reached the Blogger page for Jo Walsh. Jo is a
social worker for Govnet Social Care, and here you can find information about
Jo’s work within child protection, as well as her hobbies and interests away
from work.
Jo grew up in County Mayo in the Republic of Ireland, and
moved to London in 1998 to embark upon a BA in Social Work at Kingston
University. Having already completed an Applied Social Studies course in her
native Ireland, this was clearly an area in which Jo wanted to move into, and
the course at Kingston is regarded as one of the best on the topic. Today, 90%
of students are satisfied with the course and 95% are in employment or further
study within six months.
Jo used her final year at Kingston University to specialise
in working with children and young people, cutting her teeth on a long
placement before moving into the industry full-time at the end of her studies.
The university also offered a Kingston Language Scheme, which Jo took advantage
of to learn Italian to a conversational level; this tied in with her existing
love and appreciation of Italian cuisine, culture and traditions.
Having gained experience in the sector, Jo’s current role
makes use of all her qualifications and knowledge built up over the years. She
works for Govnet Social Care as Kingston Borough Council’s Child Safety
Officer, which sees Jo work with vulnerable children regarded as at risk of
neglect, harm or abuse. It is Jo’s responsibility to establish regular contact
with the children and families, ensuring that security issues are dealt with
effectively and trying to establish a positive outcome to leave the child in an
improved situation with a hopeful future. Needless to say, it is a challenging
role that requires a great deal of skill, patience and sympathy, but it is also
a rewarding one and something that Jo has always been passionate about.
Away from work, Jo relaxes by spending time with her husband
and two young daughters. They love camping trips and horse riding adventures as
a family, and make the most of living by Richmond Park by taking their two
border collies on long walks. To connect with Jo, follow this page today!
